The unfortunate state of Generic Emails

Most professional emails written - whether they're cold emails or not - are generic and impersonal. This is a shame because it forces the recipient to only feel a certain way about the email. A personalized email, on the other hand, is a much more personal gesture that can be made in a professional manner. The recipient of your email will feel that you are more interested in them and their success.

Personalized Email vs Generic Email

Let's understand the difference between a generic email and a personalized email with the help of an example. Here's a generic email we received recently asking for a guest post:

Notice how the email lacks personalization. At the most basic level, a personalized email includes the name of the receiver, and this didn't have it. It was likely an email blast that was sent to thousands of people. If you received such an email in your inbox, would you reply to it? Probably not.

On the other hand, let's say you are Bud with the email "bud@sunken-island.com-.and you receive an email like

Hey Bud, I see that you like to travel and surf. I am actually looking to rent my house in the Bahamas next summer. I would love to get your opinion on some places I have been looking into so I can feel confident in my decision.

Would you reply to this email instead? See the difference versus the generic email?

By emailing your prospects with personalization, you are making sure that you are emailing them personally and not sending a generic email. This can also be applied to compliments as well.

Benefits of using a personalized email

Using a personalized email can make all the difference when trying to reach someone. This way, you are reaching out to someone specifically and not spamming them with a mass email. When you send a personalized email, you are giving the individual a chance to take an interest in your company and your offer. This way, you can learn about the person and their interests and tailor your follow-up email to them specifically. Furthermore, personalized emails are more likely to be opened because the individual is seeing that you are trying to reach them specifically.

How to deal with the drawbacks of Lemlist?

Lemlist is a great outreach tool but lacks detailed personalization features. The platform lets you personalize emails on;y using predefined fields.

Let me explain what I mean by predefined fields. To send an email campaign using Lemlist, you can import the details of your prospects by uploading a spreadsheet that contains the name, company, website, and other details of the prospects.

Let's say my outreach email template is as follows.

Subject: Cold email marketing software Hello {recipient name}, I am {sender's name} from Lemlist. We are a sales automation and cold email software that helps you grow your business. Here's a brief overview of what Lemlist can do for you: - Personalize your emails to increase engagement - Automate follow-ups to nurture leads and turn them into customers - Engage with leads across all channels - Get more customers and increase sales We know you have a busy schedule, so we would love to send you a free trial of Lemlist. The fields within the angular brackets are the predefined fields. In the template above, Lemlist will replace the recipient name from the spreadsheet and send them the email.

The problem with Lemlist here is that it can only personalize emails with the data it is provided. If you want to send a hyper-personalized email that compliments your prospect - like the one below - then Lemlist can't generate such compliments
